Brent came to Catholic Charities’ Community Connections program through a referral from his employer, Mike Carlton of Beacon Lighthouse for the Blind, because he was struggling with severe mobility challenges due to diabetes, legal blindness, and a recent foot amputation that was not healing properly. Brent works part-time at Beacon Lighthouse and walks two blocks from his apartment to catch the bus to work. Despite never being late or missing a day, he experienced extreme pain from walking in a walking boot, which made grocery trips, social outings, and even basic mobility nearly impossible.

Community Connections helped Brent by providing a motorized scooter through the St. Joseph’s funding program. Staff verified Brent’s needs, explored partnerships with other agencies, and ultimately arranged to purchase and deliver a high-quality scooter. With support from Brent’s employer to pick up and assemble the scooter, Brent was able to regain safe and independent mobility.

Now, Brent’s life has dramatically improved. He can ride the scooter to the bus stop, navigate the grocery store, enjoy meals with friends, and work without pain. The scooter has given him freedom, independence, and a renewed sense of joy. Brent continues to work at Beacon Lighthouse to supplement his Social Security Disability benefits and is overwhelmed with gratitude for the support he received. Most importantly, Brent can now enjoy living again.

Community Connections exists to meet neighbors like Brent in moments of financial and practical strain with dignity, stability, and care. To learn more, visit https://catholiccharitiesnw.org/community-connections/
